Porting Iphone App for PhoneGap on Android - Performance Issues

We have been working for several months in a fairly substantial iOS application using PhoneGap 1.8.1 and the Telerik Kendo user interface. I would say that the iOS application is about 90% as fast as its own equivalent, which is quite acceptable for us. We took the same code base and replaced it in javascript files equivalent to Android, loaded our device (Motorola Xoom 4.0.3), and the performance is just awful. Worst of all, these are page transitions that should take maybe 0.3 seconds - take 2-5 seconds. The performance is the same, if not worse, on emulators (not surprisingly).

If there is useful code that I could post, let me know. Otherwise, I think we are looking for other people who have encountered this situation and / or suggestions for improving performance. PhoneGap is currently not a starter for Android development for us.
