Photoshop - how to add a white frame around my target image

I want to add a white frame around this image. This image is inside a transparent canvas, which is larger than the visible image, and when I opened this image in Photoshop, there is only one layer on this image.

The easiest and most flexible way, in my opinion, is to do this with a stroke on the layer.

Double-click the layer in Photoshop, click on the stroke, make sure the preview is checked, then do a 3px white stroke.
