Need detailed API information to configure Tridion content delivery

I am only three months away from Tridion. I know the basic things related to this tool. I read somewhere that we can improve content delivery functionality by expanding it with some Java APIs.

Can someone help me where we can get this Java API from. It would be great if you could give some examples for this.
