KyotoCabinet and several processes?

I read the documentation and learned very little about several processes (readers and writers) accessing the same cabinet database. It seems you can create multiple readers, but if you do not indicate that ONOLOCK several authors will block the attempt to open db. Can someone shed some light on how this works or if it is possible? I understand that KyotoTycoon is one option, but I'm especially interested in learning about KyotoCabinet.
