How to make a carbon filter

I am interested in some kind of angular filters, such as Photoshop. Photocopy filter or note paper. Does anyone have paper or instructions on how this filter works?

At best, I want to create the following:

input:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Output:

I think this is a process similar to panning. I could get a pretty similar image in gimp:

  • Convert to Gray
  • Duplication on two layers
  • Slightly blur one layer
  • Edge detection in another layer with a large radius DOG filter
  • A juxtaposition of two layers that plays a little with transparency.

Again, as VSOverFlow pointed out, there is also an edge detection element in the game. You can explore Sobel and Prewitt filters. These are three simple options that will give you something similar to the image you provided. Perhaps you could generate a result from the Prewitt filter? I do not know how Photoshop implements its filters. If none of these parameters is close enough to what you are looking for, I would recommend looking for information about specific implementations of these filters in Photoshop.
