How to get file content type in PHP?

I use PHP to send email with attachment. An attachment can be any of several file types (pdf, txt, doc, swf, etc.).

First, the script receives the file using "file_get_contents".

Later the script echoed in the header:

Content-Type: <?php echo $the_content_type; ?>; name="<?php echo $the_file_name; ?>"

How to set the correct value for $ the_content_type ?

I use this function, which includes several backups, to compensate for older versions of PHP or simply poor results:
