Failed to resolve host when trying to install RVM

I am trying to install RVM in my environment by following the instructions on the RVM page

curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby

but I always get the following:

Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed

curl: (6) Could not resolve host: github.com; nodename nor servname provided, or not known

I have the same error when trying to set stones before trying RVM. Some say that this is a network problem, but I can’t understand what it is. I am new to Ruby and am trying to set up an environment for working with rails.

I tried ping github.com and most of the packages went fine with a loss of less than 10%.

So is this really a problem with my network? If so, how can I fix this?

I am running Mac OS X 10.8.
