Create a simple graphical editor in Java Swing using Swing components

I am currently working on a project in which I need a very simple editor for GUI-like objects. This editor will be a canvas on which well-known GUI widgets can be placed. For example, you can place a button and text field on it, move them and resize them. No interaction with the widgets themselves is required.

I tried to do this by adopting a very simple drawing tutorial, I thought it would be easy to implement this way, but I am facing a lot of problems with drawing custom shapes and text on canvas and dragging and dropping these shapes.

I was wondering if I can reuse Swing widgets on JPanel and allow the user to place, move and resize them. If so, what should I look at?

I know this may seem like very little information, but I'm honestly stuck in finding a solution.

I thought I should remember the good old days of Swing and a bit of fun, giving you proof of concept for this. It supports adding a button to the main panel, and then moving and basic resizing.

This is just a proof of concept, but it answers many questions that you already have. I added a few TODOs there, for example, you will know what to do next.

For the actual coloring of components, use real Swing components (the user interaction class will have a link to the component that should represent and delegate the actual rendering to this component).

This approach avoids most of the difficulties involved in expanding the original Swing components, but you can still reuse all of their drawing code.
