Use CNAME with Azure Shared Site for Windows

I follow the instructions on the Azure site to add a CNAME to point to my Azure site. I had some problems making it work, and it seems that some posts have some conflicting information.

I have my site in the "General" mode, which according to Azure’s instructions supports user domains, and, indeed, it allows me to manage domains. But some messages seem to indicate that I should be working in backup mode. Can anyone confirm this?

In addition, some messages indicate that I need to add a CNAME to the Azure Management Portal, but I cannot find where it is. Any help appreciated?

I don't understand CNAME records very well. My DNS provider allows me to add both. Do I need to change both? Currently, my A record points to the “root” of the IP address that Azure gives me and CNAME points www.mydomain on the Azure mysite.azurewebsites.net website. I left them for a while to preach, and nothing happens.

The concept of categories FREE, SHARED, RESERVEDis very recent; Microsoft launched it just 2 days ago. He used to be either FREE, or RESERVED. You can attach your own domain name only for a reserved instance.
