Sitecore presentation details do not update when template is changed

I am working on a Sitecore site (6.4.0.101124), which has two templates used for the home page. They have a very similar structure - the big difference between them is that each of them has one other sub-layer in the "Controls" section of the "About the representation of standard values" section. I understand that when changing a template in an element, the standard template values must be applied to this element. However, when content editors change the template, the presentation data remains unchanged until I log in and change them.

So this means that either I misunderstand how this should work, or something wobbly happens. This is a very similar problem to the one discussed in this thread , but the answers given do not seem to apply since this item was not created using the branch template.

Has anyone had a similar experience with this (and he decided)? I am somehow outside the base, how should this work?

Then I started to set the default value in the template so that I wanted this field, and then selected Versions → Fields → Reset after highlighting the standard value. The first time I did this, the Reset field is empty. Then I did it again, and the field changed on every page that used that particular field. Hope this helps. It seems that if you already have a field that was not accepted for a start, you need to make a standard Reset value.
