Excel / VBA - determine if a server is available

At my workstation, different computers are on different subnets, and if the computers are on the same subnet, such as the Samba server, I can get to the file server by going to \\myserv\MyFolder, but for the PC it is on a different subnet, the only way to get to the server is with the IP (i.e., \\1.2.3.4\MyFolder).

I'm just curious in VBA if I can say:

if I can find the server using \\myserv, then use myserv, otherwise use 1.2.3.4?

Unfortunately, I cannot configure the network at all, and I want to configure it in such a way that, at least when the IP has changed, most of my users can still use this tool by visiting \\myserv\MyFolder.

Assuming you are in a Windows environment, here's an alternative approach (without actual code):

  • In Excel VBA, use the SHELL function to execute the Net View function and send the output to a file. i.e:

  1. After that, check the size of the output file. If the size of the output file is> 0, this means that the path is found. If the path is not found, the output file will be 0.

  1. Cleanse yourself: Kill( vsFileName )

This is an alternative if you do not want to interfere with win32 functions. It is a good idea to randomize the file name every time you run the code to avoid collisions.

Here is the code I use to check server availability. It uses the Windows winsock32 API, and I had no problems with it. I don’t need to worry about privates, so I don’t know how it will cope with this.
