Removing auto subscribers from the iPhone app

I have an iPhone app that also contains auto-update products as an in-app purchase. Products are subscriptions to our service for up to 1 year in the future. In the next version, we wanted to remove the entire product for purchases and the auto-update product from our application.

To accomplish this, we removed the registration option inside our application, so a new user cannot register. Now we would like to disable automatic updates for all existing users.

How can i do this? Is it enough to remove the products included in the application for our application in iTunes Connect? Are users notified of this?

According to Apple (see WWDC 2011 Session 510 , in App Purchase for iOS and OS X, at 48:55), only what you can do as a developer to prevent auto-renewal subscriptions:

  • Raise the price.
  • Extract the automatically updated IAP product from iTunes connect.

In both cases, notification emails are sent to subscribers, but not immediately. The conversation says that Apple checks 10 days before the (annual) renewal of the subscription and sends an email at this time. However, it is not documented anywhere, so I would consider this as an implementation detail.

I did the last (uninstalling the product) several times using my (monthly) applications and it seemed to work as advertised.
