What replaced SADT?

Before everything became an “enterprise”, there was a time when everything was “structured”. About 20 years ago, structured analysis and structured design (SADT) along with CASE tools promised salvation for many IT professionals.

While the hype back — like any other adverts — came and went, I am amazed to see almost no sign of SADT. And in fact, I believe that it was not so bad to deserve such a fate. What I especially like is that it emphasizes the functional aspects of the system, i.e. You will get a clear idea of what the system produces (you cannot specify systems with recordings only with SADT), a paradigm that is also fascinating in functional programming.

My questions:

  • What is the modern equivalent of SADT?
  • Is there a UML drawing style (other than a context diagram) that offers a similar level of abstraction and comparable refinement capabilities.
  • Do you know why the world abandoned SADT?
  • Do you know about any CASE tools that allow you to do SADT and that go beyond simple drawing tools and, for example, allow hierarchical charts with consistency checking
