Production Line

Some of the work that we do in my company is slowly approaching a family of products with different products in the same family and different tastes (or sets of functions) in each product. I am looking for some technical solutions for a product line that can help us. Web search leads to large resources and many different sources of information and different methodologies. Before connecting to any of them in depth, I thought it would be useful to get some practical advice from someone who has done something like this before. Does anyone have pointers / nuggets of wisdom in this area? I am especially looking for the best ways to do the following in a product line environment:

  • configuration and build management
  • ease of development cycle
  • Testing

Top three tips. Automation, automation, automation.

Read Continuous Integration . Creating an “assembly” used to be something of a big ritual in those days. Find the “car” and the “files” with the “guy,” and only he knows how to pack everything, etc. Using CruiseControl and its cousins, unit tests are performed, development assemblies are created, and the installation program is packaged automatically. There is nothing magical in any of the tools, but spending time installing each component and supporting them greatly rewards the team. Automated assemblies are becoming a mundane part of life.
