What is the most scalable push notification system on Android?

I am writing a messaging app for Android. Since 30% of Android users are still at level 2.1, I decided that we would not use the Google C2DM system for push notifications, which requires 2.2+.

Does anyone have experience building medium to large Android apps that require push notifications? I'm interested in things like:

  • How many users can be reliably supported on a server or IP address?
  • How hard is it to increase bandwidth when you go?
  • How long does it take to configure the server?
  • How reliably does it transmit messages?
  • How fast does it deliver messages?

I know that there are several popular solutions, such as MQTT , Deacon , Xtify and Urban Airship , but I can not find reliable data on the above topics from people who actually implemented these solutions in power.

The Urban Airship blog contains several entries describing how they scale their Android solution for devices to 2.2:
