Are htaccess rules effective?

So, I have a ReWrite rule set in my .htaccess file. The reason for this is because my server was processing the arabic.php file behind the scene when the end user browses to www.mysite.co.uk/ عربية:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^عربية$ arabic.php

I have about 40 rules as stated above. Is it OK with apache or am I pushing it, and is there a better way to achieve my ultimate goal?

No, that's fine, like any other 40 rules, as a single string comparison using regular expressions.
