SEO: Subdomains or Subfolders for a Wiki?

I am currently working on a multilingual Wiki and must decide whether to use subdomains or subfolders to separate each language.

I know that most people usually recommend subfolders for SEO. But since Wikipedia uses subdomains, I was wondering if the subdomains would be better suited, as this would help differentiate search results for each language and possibly pay in the long run when it comes to the top 10 results.

There are two different questions here: how to structure your Wiki and how to structure your URLs. In MediaWiki, it is recommended to use a separate instance for each language, as this:

  • Allows you to easily bind interwiki
  • Easy default interface language for content language
  • Stop search results for bleeding in different languages (search on the French wiki, answers only in French)

It depends on how much content you have. If it is a huge / popular site, for example, Wikipedia, each subdomain still has a significant amount of traffic and will maintain a high rating. If this is a smaller site with less traffic, then it will be divided between subdomains, and SEO will not be so good.
