What does 100-continue mean in a PUT request?

I saw Expect: 100-continue in some PUT request (file upload), what does this mean?

What should happen, you should send request headers with:

Expect: 100-continue

headline. Then, after you sent the headers, but before sending the payload, you should check if you get a 100 response or a 417. If you get a 100 response, you can continue to send the payload. If you do not, you must stop.
