Is barcode scanning an API for product information, etc.?

I am in the Android ZXing java library and I wanted to get information about it. Where can I go with the API for product details.

Back when I was looking for it, I could not find anything. If nothing has changed, it is best to grab the barcode and clear Google or Amazon for details. In fact, Amazon may have an API in its dev files, but lately I have verified that their product search is not yet compatible with Android.
