Vim Background Preference

I noticed in several dark Vim color schemes that the background on the lines where the user entered the text is displayed in one color, and the empty lines below the entered text are displayed in a different color. One example of this is in the asu1dark color scheme. I would like to add this setting to my own color scheme. Does anyone know how to incorporate this difference in background color?
