Why do forums store posts in a database?

From looking at how some forum tools store data in a database (for example, phpBB uses MySQL databases to store almost everything), I began to wonder why they do it? It cannot be used as quickly and effectively. Maybe xsl with xslt for storing topics and forum posts? Or at least store messages in a thread?
