What are the benefits of using an external email sending provider?

Assuming I send 10,000 emails daily, does it make sense to switch to an external provider such as Sendgrid / Postmark / Amazon SES? Why?

Is it because my clients are more likely to receive emails (i.e. their servers have a better reputation, they know better how to handle SPF / DKIM, etc.)?

Is it because I do not need to worry about setting up / administering an SMTP server?

Is it due to bandwidth or server load?

Is this because it handles unsubscriptions / bounces / etc better?

Is this all? :)

I ask because I have a system that works. It is not 100% reliable (still some messages get lost on the way), and I am sure that it could be improved in other ways, but I want to know what benefits I could expect from switching to an external provider.

PS: I'm definitely not a spammer. I am sending the information that people requested. :)

All of the above!

  • Do you want to spend time fussing around your SMTP server?
  • Do you always want your SPF and DKIM records to be correct?
  • Do you want to spend a lot of time creating your own verification methods for delivery - bounces, openings, and clicks?
  • Do you want to spend a lot of time checking the reputation of your IP address and make sure that it is included in the white list?
  • HTML CSS ?
