Joins integer columns more efficiently than joins varchar in Postgresql?

I have heard / read the suggestion that joins in whole columns are more efficient than joins in varchar columns. Sometimes I heard that it qualified as follows: "Joining into whole columns is more efficient than joining into long varchar columns."

can anyone comment on whether the statement is true, and if so, some of the main reasons?

Any articles or links are welcome and appreciated. thank!
