Can VB.NET be used as a game engine?

I know VB.NET and I planned to create a simple 2d game engine. I had no problems creating such an engine and launching a real game. However, I was told that VB.NET might not be the best choice for "too much graphics work." I would like to know if this is true. Can VB.NET really not effectively manage the loading of graphics simultaneously on the screen? If not, what software should I use to create this engine?

I found that people usually see VB.NET as a sub-park language and basically associate it with Visual Basic 6.0 (or earlier).
