Certificates and Provisioning Profiles

I am looking for a more detailed guide on which various steps sign the application code. I read the manual, which is available on the resource provisioning portal, but I do not understand the concept of certificates and training profiles, as well as the difference between a developer and a distribution.

There are also various schemes in Xcode (using Xcode 4). I do not understand the purpose of this. I successfully downloaded the app in the AppStore, so I don't need a guide on how to do this. What I'm looking for is links to a more detailed “text” where I can read about it, or if someone wants to explain it to me, it will be highly appreciated. Thank!
