Please help me understand the possible reasons for this exception or, better yet, how to fix it?

Perhaps your Oracle or Java process terminated without completing the transaction? which is trying to recover but cannot, see IBM - WebSphere Application Server does not start using XAException: XAER_RMERR (xa_recover)
