Drupal Or not Drupal?

I am creating a diving community, but I do not know if I should use Drupal or create my community on myself in PHP. I have never used Drupal and therefore do not know how to create a theme. I already have a design. I also need a forum.

Any ideas?

Drupal is great for community websites, but its a steep learning curve. If you know enough PHP to create your own website, then you should be fine to get started with Drupal. Why not install it and play a little?

The forums in Drupal are a bit averaged, but PHPBB integrates very well, and there are modules to facilitate integration.
