Problems with mTextEditorWatcher on Android

Sorry for the previous "Why is Android such a mess?" question. I am just stunned by this problem. I am trying to make a char. counter in EditText:

final TextWatcher mTextEditorWatcher = new TextWatcher() {
        EditText edit_text = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editText1);
        TextView text_view = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.textView1);

    public void onTextChanged(CharSequence s, int start, int before, int count) {

And then he falls. This is why I really asked about EditText / TextView fixes earlier. I don’t understand what is wrong with this code?

This solution was borrowed from here , and Cameron Ketchum suggests using it mEditText.addTextChangedListener(mTextEditorWatcher);to set TextWatcher to EditText. Maybe this is the core of my problem?

Update 4/24/2012: So far no working solution has been found for this.
