Depth imaging from an iPhone (or consumer camera)

I read that you can create a depth image using the stereo camera settings (where two cameras with the same focal length / aperture / other camera settings photograph the object at an angle).

Is it possible to take two snapshots almost immediately after each other (for example, on the iPhone) and use the differences between the two pictures to create an image of depth?

A small amount of hand movement and shaking obviously scans the camera, creating an angular displacement, and perhaps this displacement can be calculated by looking at the total displacement angle of the objects found in both photographs.
