Development of the Webservice backend and database for the iPhone App for an offline user

I want to develop an application for the iPhone, but I'm not sure what options might be for hosting a database and a web service for communicating with my iPhone application. Can someone please suggest me what could be the best way to do this?

I know how to build everything, but I never came across this situation. I work in an environment where we ask the administrator to provide us with a server on which we host everything, but if I want to do it myself and do not have a server infrastructure, what options can I have? Do I need to buy from a web hosting provider?

Thank.
