Nodejs npm install socket.io error

I am a new node.js. developer I am trying a simple chat project. So I want to install socket.io with NPM, but I get this error.

I am using ubuntu 12.04

Like the answer in the link posted in the comment above, I suggest starting first

npm config set registry https://registry.npmjs.org/

We recommend using sudo.

sudo npm install socket.io
