Excel: crosstab link not working

I am having problems with cross-reference in the same file.

On the second tab, called “Disclosure and Identification,” there is a set of merged cells in D5: G5 that contain text.

On the first tab there is a link to this cell. The formula used "='Disclosures & Identification'!D5. Instead of copying text from the second field of the tab, the formula simply appears in the cell.

I tried to rename the tab (in case it was a problem); I tried to use the whole set of merged cells in the link (d5: g5); I saved the file under a new name and upgraded to Office 2007 format (the old version was in 2003, but it should have worked anyway); and I did what I consider suitable for finding an answer (no luck). Does anyone know why this might not work?

There are two possible things:

  • Make sure the cell format is not "Text." If so, change something else, such as General, then double-click in the formula bar and press Enter.

  • , 'Show Formulas' . "". Ctrl + `
