MySQLi has prepared statements, what does STMT mean?

Prepared MySQLi statements use a variable $stmt, but I could not find what STMT means or why it is used. For other variables (such as $queryand $results) it has always made sense to me, and I'm just wondering why $stmt, what's the story behind it?
